Do you dream of feeling valued and recognized? Understanding your personal and professional value is the first step. Thus let`s take a look how to determine your worth.
Definition and Benefits of Knowing Your Value
The term value describes how highly we think about ourselves. Since our upbringing usually shapes our beliefs, we are often unaware of them.
A friend of mine grew up on a farm in the Midwest with seven brothers. Rather than telling her to be have like a girl, her father taught her that she could do everything the boys can. He kept on repeating it over and over again. Therefore she developed a mindset where she was deeply convinced that she had the total freedom to become and do whatever she wanted to. What helped her to succeed was to believe in herself. Early in life she was to taught to know her value.
As a consequence of knowing our value, we usually have a healthy self worth, respect and take good care of ourselves. Furthermore, we are more emotionally resilient, confident and we will more likely achieve our goals in life. So what can we do to feel valued?
“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” Albert Einstein
Clarify Your Personal Values
When you take a close look at your personal values, you discover what’s truly important to you. Consequently, this exercise is especially relevant for all kind of relationships, marriage or family. Most of us have been carrying round our inner values for years paying little attention to them. Therefore investing five minutes into this little exercise is easy. It can be the key to identify a source of strength and success in life.
Taking a look at our positive and strongest values in our daily lives can also give us a great deal of self assurance.
Thus we have created a guide on how to write your personal value statement. Take 5 steps and realize your personal core values.
Step 1: Know your value by identifying what is most important in your life
Maybe you are wondering how human values can help you understand yourself better. Much like companies, your personal core values are there to guide your behaviors and choices. Get them right and you can create the future you want to experience. As a result, you will be focused in your decision-making with clear direction. Get them wrong, or leave them vague and you might be tempted to follow the mainstream. Even more you might be manipulated by others.
You will also send clear signals to the people around you as your decisions will reflect what truly matters to you at this stage in your life. As a result people will start recognizing your worth.
Your core values may also help you manage your personal resources such as time, love and money more wisely. Therefore they will contribute to improving your life quality.
Keep in mind: Values can change over time. While you are in College you are usually focused on building your own life and establishing new friendships. Your family will not be as important as before you went to college or once you decide to get married and build your own family.
Step 2: Which values fit you best?
Most of us have a brief idea of core values. The reason is because they were created by the family we grew up with, the culture that surrounds us and beliefs we currently have.
When I considered values from a rational perspective, I realized that our mind likes to create a picture of who we would like to be. The purpose of defining values for yourself is to discover who you are at this stage of your life.
So how do you identify your core values? When going through the list try to make sure to include mind and gut. Here is a quick tip on how to identify your gut feeling. For most people what matters to us feels right or the other way around. When we lose ourselves it simply causes a sense of awkwardness. Furthermore our gut feeling might even send us alarm signals.
Step 3: Recognize your worth by checking our list of core values
So let’s try that approach to identify some values that make you feel good. Get yourself a piece of paper or a digital device to create a values worksheet.
Simply go through examples of values in the following list and ask yourself: If I applied that value to my daily life – does that make me feel good? If yes: circle the word. If not, go to the next word.
The list of your personal values could alternatively be called “the make me feel good or feel valued list”.
If you get to a word you don`t know, make yourself a dot and skip it for the first round. You can return at step 4.
Being the best
Making a difference
Step 4: Checking unknown values
Do you feel like checking one of the meanings of some of the values? Simply go online and google the meaning of the values you didn’t know.
Step 5: Know your value by prioritizing your top 10 values
Look at the words you have circled a second time and ask yourself the following question:
Is this value very important to me?
Make sure you answer immediately to access your intuition and avoid getting an answer from your rational mind.
If yes, mark it a second time. At the end the values you marked twice, will be your list of personal values.
Get started – Apply your values to your daily life and be recognized
Would you like to analyze how present your values have been in your life lately? First of all, look at how you have spent your time in one of the past weeks. Furthermore ask yourself the following question: Do I spend my time in alignment with my list of core values? For example, if health is on your list, how much time have you invested in high quality food and/or exercising?
You might want to try to identify if your schedule already reflects how you want to live after prioritizing your values. As a consequence, you might like to make a change.
Do you sometimes find it difficult to make decisions? Considering your values will give you more direction and self-confidence. Need a little push? Get inspired by the best Ruth Bader Gainsburg quotes.
